A-10A, Hobby Boss 1/48 (\"pl\" English) Print E-mail

Tough (pea)nut to crack

I wanted to build a Warthog in this particular camo for quite a while.  Few years back, I bought the TwoBobs decals (#48009, "Experimental Camo Warthogs") and slowly started gathering bits and pieces to commence a build.  In the meantime, I bought an old Monogram model.  It looked OK in the box, but I was reluctant to build it, since it had raised panel lines (not to mention the rescribing the lines on the whole model, which simply scared me).

Not too long ago, my local modeling store had one of the Hobby Boss A-10s on steep discount.  I figured that this is my chance to finally build it.  Since it looked very good in a box, I decided to tackle it without any aftermarket. Also, since I decided on treating this build as a relaxing, simple adventure, I didn't backdate it to the version actually used to test this camo.

Unfortunately, there were few times when this model was not even close to being relaxing.  In some cases, the part design is typical for the Chinese companies (like Trumpeter or Hobby Boss) and trying to fix it is nothing but frustrating.  Most of the time it was coming together fairly well, but there were three or four times when I thought that this model will make a trip with me to the shooting range :).

As far as the colors go, they were 100% custom mixed.  I started with several receipies found on the net, but since none of them were using Tamiya paints, I had to resort to mixing colors myself.  It took few evenings, but I was finally able to find colors that resembled the ones in the pictures (at least in my opinion).  Unfortunately, since I mixed them using my "Mk. I eyeball" I don't remember the proportions :(.

Panel lines were accented using MIGs brown wash which worked (as always) exceptionally well.
